How to Teach Pinyin at Home
You do not need a teaching degree to teach pinyin — you need ten minutes a day, the right order (tones before letters), and words your child already says. Here is a plan that works at a kitchen table.
Week one: tones before letters
Start with the four tones, because they are the part English never trained. Use your hand as a pitch track: flat and high for the first tone (mā), rising like a question for the second (má), dipping down and up for the third (mǎ), and falling like a command for the fourth (mà). Turn it into a game: you draw the contour in the air, your child sings the tone; then swap. Finish the week with the classic set 妈 (mā, mom), 麻 (má, numb), 马 (mǎ, horse), 骂 (mà, scold) — one syllable, four words, proof that tones are meaning.
Weeks two and three: initials and finals
Teach the initials in small families, four or five at a time: b p m f, then d t n l, then g k h. Save the tricky ones for last — j q x, zh ch sh r, z c s — and call out the three famous traps explicitly: q sounds like "ch", x like "sh", c like "ts". For finals, start with the six simple vowels a o e i u ü, then add compounds like ai, ei, ao, ou. Drill by combining: write an initial on one card and a final on another, slap them together, and read the result — b plus a is ba, m plus i is mi. Kids treat this as a card game, which is exactly the point.
Week four: real syllables, real words
Pinyin that never touches a real word evaporates. As soon as your child can combine sounds, anchor them to vocabulary they use: 猫 (māo, cat), 狗 (gǒu, dog), 鱼 (yú, fish), 鸟 (niǎo, bird). Print a tracing sheet with pinyin labels on, so the sound, the letters and the character are practiced in one motion. Then start hiding it: the same list with labels off becomes a reading quiz. The pinyin worksheet page has the toggle built in.
Games that keep it alive
Tone charades: hum a word's tone contour with no sound and let your child guess the word. Minimal-pair bingo: shi vs xi, zhu vs zu — you say one, they point. Label the house: pinyin sticky notes on the door (mén) and the table (zhuō zi). Ten playful minutes daily beats an hour-long weekend lesson. When pinyin is comfortable, the natural next step is more characters — see learn Chinese for kids.
Try it
Pre-filled with 猫 (māo, cat), 狗 (gǒu, dog), 鸟 (niǎo, bird), 鱼 (yú, fish) — pinyin on, stroke order on, big tracing grid.

FAQ
Do I need fluent Mandarin to teach pinyin?
You need to hear the difference between the four tones and model words your child already knows. If your own pronunciation is shaky, learn each small batch together — parent and child sounding out mā má mǎ mà side by side works fine.
Should tones or letters come first?
Tones. The four tone contours are the hardest part for English-speaking kids and the part letters cannot help with. A child who can sing the four tones finds the initials and finals easy; the reverse order builds bad habits.
How long does it take to learn pinyin?
With ten minutes a day, most children cover the core initials and finals in about a month and keep consolidating for a few months more. Speed matters less than attaching pinyin to real words as soon as possible.
When should we stop using pinyin?
Phase it out per word: labels on while a character is new, off once your child should recall it. Pinyin is scaffolding — keep it available for looking things up, but let characters carry the reading.
