Year of the Goat 2027: Activities for Kids

Chinese New Year on February 6, 2027 begins the Year of the Goat, 羊年 (yáng nián). The character 羊 is one of the friendliest to write, which makes this a perfect year to center your activities on one animal and one character.

Goat, sheep or ram?

Kids often ask this, and the honest answer is "all three". The character 羊 covers goats, sheep and rams, so English books use all three names. 山羊 is a goat, 绵羊 is a sheep and 小羊 is a lamb or kid. The previous Goat years were 2015 and 2003, so some older siblings, cousins or parents may share it — a fun thing to find out at a family dinner.

In the traditional sixty-year cycle, 2027 is 丁未, often described in English as a Fire Goat year. The goat is usually associated with gentleness, calm and kindness, which gives you a nice theme to talk about: how can we be gentle and kind this year?

Writing 羊: a character kids can master in a week

羊 has six strokes and is symmetrical, so it gives young writers a quick success. It even looks like a goat's face: two horns at the top, then the horizontal lines, then a long vertical stroke down the middle.

• Strokes 1–2: the two short "horns" at the top, left then right.
• Strokes 3–5: three horizontal strokes, top to bottom; the last one is the longest.
• Stroke 6: the vertical stroke through the middle, written last.

Tracing it in a tian-zi-ge grid helps keep the two horns balanced around the center line.

A seven-day goat plan

1. Day 1: read or tell the story of the Great Race, where the Goat finished eighth.
2. Day 2: trace 羊 five times, then draw a goat around the character.
3. Day 3: add 羊年 and practice saying 羊年快乐 (Happy Year of the Goat).
4. Day 4: cotton-ball sheep craft — glue cotton onto a paper cut-out and write 羊 on its body.
5. Day 5: learn the lucky phrase 三羊开泰 (sān yáng kāi tài), a New Year wish for a fresh, prosperous start. It is a pun: 羊 sounds like 阳 (sunshine), and the original phrase is 三阳开泰.
6. Day 6: 喜气洋洋 (xǐ qì yáng yáng), "full of joy" — another pun on 洋 and 羊. Write the card for grandparents.
7. Day 7: a mini quiz — you say 羊, 羊年, 小羊, 快乐; your child writes them from memory.

Classroom ideas

Give every student a paper goat with a blank body. Each day they add one word to the goat: 羊, 新年, 快乐. By the end of the week, the goats become a display wall. For mixed-age groups, younger students trace while older students write a short sentence such as 我是____年出生的 (I was born in the year of the ____).

Keep the content factual: the zodiac is a cultural tradition, and it is fine for kids to enjoy "goat personality" games as stories rather than predictions.
