The twelve signs as writing practice

The zodiac set — 鼠 rat, 牛 ox, 虎 tiger, 兔 rabbit, 龙 dragon, 蛇 snake, 马 horse, 羊 goat, 猴 monkey, 鸡 rooster, 狗 dog, 猪 pig — is a well-balanced practice list. It starts easy (牛 is four strokes) and builds to satisfying monsters like 鼠 (thirteen strokes) and, in traditional form, 龍 (sixteen). Every character is a real, useful word on its own, and the set carries a story, which makes it stick: the great race, the river crossing, the order the animals arrived.

Pair it with the Lunar New Year lesson

In the run-up to the festival, run the zodiac sheet alongside the Chinese New Year vocabulary sheet: festival words on one day, animals the next. A classroom favorite: every student finds their birth-year animal, traces that character on a big 16 mm grid, and writes 我属… ("my sign is…") — 属 is on the sheet for exactly this. For a check afterward, the quiz template prints the animal names' pinyin as prompts with an answer key.

Simplified and traditional differ here

Six of the twelve animals change shape between scripts: 龙→龍, 马→馬, 羊 stays, 鸡→雞, 狗 stays, 猪→豬 (and 蛇, 鼠, 牛, 虎, 兔, 猴 stay). That makes the zodiac a natural first lesson in script awareness for families straddling both systems — print one of each and compare.
