What a good practice sheet actually includes
A proper Chinese character practice sheet is more than empty squares. Each row starts with a dark model character and its pinyin, continues with light-gray copies to trace, and finishes with blank grids where the child writes from memory. Hanzi Sheets adds two things most printable PDFs leave out: an English meaning for every word (so a parent who is stronger in English can still supervise), and a step-by-step stroke-order strip at the end of the first row, with the current stroke highlighted in red.
Because the sheet is generated, it always matches this week's word list — paste the characters from the textbook, a library book, or last night's homework, and the layout, pinyin and meanings fill in automatically from a built-in index of 11,000+ common words.
Trace first, then prove it
Tracing builds the motion; blank grids prove it stuck. Start with the default "All tracing" sheet on day one, then regenerate the same words with the trace-to-blank ratio at 3:1 or "All blank" two days later. When a character keeps collapsing, tap it in the on-screen preview to park it in the mistake book, and print a review sheet of just those characters at the end of the week.
Set it up for your child's hand
Under about eight years old, choose the 田字格 tian zi ge grid at size L (16 mm) and keep the sheet to six to ten characters — short enough to finish before attention runs out. Older children do well at M (13 mm) with two rows per character. Everything prints on plain A4 or US Letter; the grids print in light gray so pencil strokes stay visible on top.
