Chinese New Year Activities for Kids
The best Chinese New Year activities for kids are simple, hands-on and tied to a few real words: hand out red envelopes, hang an upside-down 福, make paper lanterns and cook dumplings together. Chinese New Year 2027 falls on February 6, so starting in January gives you a relaxed run-up.
Before the holiday: cleaning, decorating, writing
1. The big clean. Families traditionally sweep the house before New Year to clear out the old year — never on the day itself, so the good luck is not swept away. Give kids a small zone and a duster, and teach the phrase 打扫 (to clean).
2. Upside-down 福. Cut a red square, turn it like a diamond and write 福 (good fortune) in the middle. Hang it upside down: "fortune is upside down", 福倒了, sounds like "fortune has arrived", 福到了. Kids love the pun once it is explained, and it is a natural reason to practice one character carefully.
3. Spring couplets. Older children can copy a short pair of lines onto red paper strips. Younger ones can write a single four-character wish such as 新年快乐. Practice on a grid first, then copy the neatest version onto the red paper.
Crafts and food
4. Paper lanterns. Fold a sheet of red paper in half, cut slits from the fold, open it and glue it into a tube. Label it 灯笼 (lantern) — a word kids can recognize long before they can write it.
5. Dumpling making. In many northern families 饺子 (dumplings) are the centerpiece of New Year's Eve. Kids can fold, even if the results are lumpy. Talk while you work: 一个, 两个, 三个 — counting dumplings is counting practice in disguise.
6. Red envelopes. Let children decorate their own 红包 (red envelope) and practice saying thank you, 谢谢, and a greeting before receiving one. If you give money, an envelope with a small note or a sticker works just as well for little ones.
Stories and play
7. The story of Nian. In the folk tale, a beast called Nian (年) came every year to frighten villagers and was driven away by the color red, bright lights and loud noise. That is why the holiday is full of red decorations, lanterns and firecrackers. Read or retell it, then let kids draw the beast and label it with 年.
8. Zodiac animal hunt. 2027 is the Year of the Goat, 羊年. Hide twelve paper animals around the room and ask kids to find them in zodiac order, or find the goat first. It is a good warm-up for the story of the Great Race.
Turning the activities into reading and writing
Pick five or six words from the activities you actually did — for example 春节 (Spring Festival), 新年 (New Year), 红包 (red envelope) and 快乐 (happy). A word that came with a memory sticks far better than a word from a list.
- Ages 3–5: trace one character a day, such as 春 or 年, in a big grid. Stop while it is still fun.
- Ages 6–8: trace the full word list across the week, then do a picture-matching game.
- Ages 9+: a short dictation on the last day, then let them write the greeting card for grandparents.
For a classroom, run stations: a craft table, a writing table and a story corner, rotating every fifteen minutes. Each station ends with one word the group says together.
