Using 欢迎

欢 is “joyful” and 迎 is “to greet/meet”, so 欢迎 is a joyful greeting — welcome. Children see it on the school gate on the first day (欢迎新同学 — “welcome, new students”), and families say it at the door: 欢迎来到我们家 (“welcome to our home”).

In Traditional Chinese the word is 歡迎; only 欢 changes, to 歡. A common classroom confusion: 欢迎 is not the reply to “thank you” — English “you're welcome” in that sense is 不客气. 欢迎 only welcomes arrivals, not gratitude.

FAQ

How do you use 欢迎 in a sentence?

欢迎 + place/person: 欢迎来到我们家 (welcome to our home), 欢迎新同学 (welcome, new classmates). On its own, a cheery 欢迎! works at the door.

Is 欢迎 the reply to 谢谢?

No — that English “you're welcome” is 不客气. 欢迎 welcomes a person arriving somewhere, not a thank-you. The two never swap in Chinese.

How is 欢迎 written in Traditional Chinese?

歡迎 — only 欢 changes, to 歡. 迎 is the same in both scripts.
