How to write 下课 — "Class Is Over" in Chinese

Using 下课
下 is “down; to finish” and 课 is “class”: 下课 means class is dismissed. The teacher announces 下课了！ and the room exhales. Students also use it to plan: 下课以后我们去操场 (“after class we're going to the playground”).
In Traditional Chinese it is 下課; only 课 changes, to 課. Pair it with 上课 (class begins) for an opposites mini-lesson. Note that 下课 names the break's start, not the goodbye — the spoken farewell at the door is 老师再见.

Who says 下课?
Usually the teacher, to dismiss the class: 下课了！ Students use it too, asking 什么时候下课？(“when is class over?”) — a timeless question.
Is 下课 the same as 放学?
下课 ends one lesson (recess follows); 放学 (fàng xué) ends the whole school day. Kids care deeply about the difference.
